Getting the proportions right
A coffee table should sit roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa and within a couple of inches of the seat height. Too low and it disappears; too tall and it blocks the seating line.
Leave 14 to 18 inches between the sofa edge and the table so people can pass without turning sideways.
A console runs behind a sofa or along an entry wall and should stop a few inches short of the sofa's length, sitting at or just below the back height.
Styling a gold table without it looking dated
Keep the metal in the room deliberate. Repeat the gold two more times at most — a lamp base, a wall sculpture, a pair of obelisks — and let everything else stay matte.
Style the top in threes: something tall, something stacked, something living. A porcelain vase set, two books, one sculptural object is enough.
