Build light in three layers
A well-lit room uses three sources: an overhead fixture for general light, a floor or table lamp at seating height for task light, and something low and warm — a small lamp or a candle — for atmosphere. Rooms lit only from the ceiling always feel flat, whatever the fixture costs.
Keep every bulb in a room at the same colour temperature. Between 2700K and 3000K reads warm and residential; anything above 3500K starts to feel like an office.
Hanging heights that work
Over a dining table, hang the bottom of a chandelier 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. In an entry or stairwell, leave at least seven feet of clearance underneath. A blown glass chandelier around 25 inches wide suits a table up to about 60 inches long.
Floor lamps belong beside seating, not stranded in a corner. An arc lamp works best when the shade lands over the outer third of a sofa rather than dead centre.
