Buying guide
Getting the rug size right
The most common mistake is buying too small. In a living room, the rug should reach at least under the front legs of every seat in the grouping — an 8 by 10 works for most sofas, a 9 by 12 for a sectional. In a bedroom, a 9 by 12 under a queen bed leaves a comfortable margin of rug on three sides.
Under a dining table, add 24 inches to each side of the tabletop so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
Wool, texture and living with it
Hand-loomed and hand-tufted wool is naturally resilient, holds its shape under heavy furniture and hides everyday wear far better than flat synthetic weaves. New wool rugs shed for the first few weeks; regular vacuuming without a beater bar settles them down.
Always use a rug pad. It stops slipping, protects the floor, and adds enough loft that the rug feels considerably more expensive underfoot.
