Buy the anchor piece first
Every room has one piece that sets its scale: the bed in a bedroom, the sectional in a living room, the desk in an office. Choose that first and size everything else to it. A contemporary platform bed with a low upholstered headboard, for instance, asks for nightstands within two inches of the mattress height.
Mixing wood tones is fine as long as the undertones agree. Warm walnut sits comfortably beside oak and rattan; it fights with a cool grey-washed ash. Repeat each tone at least twice in a room so it reads as a decision rather than an accident.
Measuring before you order
Large furniture is the one category where returns are genuinely painful, so measure the doorway, the hallway turn and the lift as well as the room. Every product page lists full assembled dimensions and box dimensions.
