Layering pillows without it looking staged
Work in odd numbers and mixed sizes. On a standard sofa, two 22-inch pillows at the outer corners, one 20-inch in front and a single lumbar is enough. Vary texture more than colour: a bouclé beside a faux fur beside a flat linen reads richer than three shades of the same weave.
Buy inserts one to two inches larger than the cover. It is the single cheapest way to make a pillow look full rather than tired.
Making a bed look like the photograph
The formula is simple: fitted sheet, flat sheet, a duvet folded back about a third, two sleeping pillows, two decorative pillows and a throw across the lower third at a slight angle. Embroidered or textured bedding does the visual work so the rest can stay plain.
Keep the palette within two or three neutrals and let the textures carry the interest.
