Scale and hanging height
Art above a sofa or bed should span roughly two thirds of the furniture below it. One oversized canvas almost always looks better than three small frames trying to cover the same wall.
Hang so the centre of the piece sits about 57 to 60 inches from the floor — eye level in most homes. Over furniture, leave six to ten inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one group.
Choosing a finish
Gold leaf and gilded canvases bounce light and warm a cool room; matte draped panels and metal wall sculpture add shadow and depth in a room that already has plenty of light. Repeat the frame or hardware metal somewhere else — a lamp, a table base — so it looks intentional.
