Why curved furniture makes a living room feel finished

One curve should lead

Curved rooms go wrong when everything curves. Choose a single hero — usually the sofa — and let it set the rhythm. The rest of the room can answer it quietly with softened corners rather than full arcs.

A curved sofa also solves conversation. It naturally angles seats toward one another, which a straight three-seater pushed against a wall never does.

Balance soft with hard

Bouclé, wool and brushed wood need something to push against. Smoked glass, stone or polished metal keeps the room from turning into a marshmallow.

A glass coffee table is the easiest fix in a small living room: it holds the centre without visually filling it.

Float the seating off the wall

Even four inches of breathing room behind a sofa reads as intention. If the room allows it, pull the seating forward and run a slim console or a floor lamp into the gap.

Give the corner a sculpture

Every living room has one dead corner. An arc lamp fills it with height and light at the same time, and throws usable reading light over the sofa without a ceiling fixture.
