How to size a velvet sectional

Measure the longest usable wall first, then subtract at least 18 inches at each end. A curved velvet sectional reads wider than its footprint because the arms sweep outward, so it needs air on both sides to look intentional rather than wedged in.

Seat depth decides how the piece feels day to day. Around 40 to 44 inches is a lounging depth you sink into; under 38 inches sits more upright and suits an apartment living room. A back height near 30 inches keeps sightlines open in an open-plan space.

Check the delivery path before you order, not after. Doorway width, stair turns and elevator depth matter more than the room itself, and a two-piece sectional is far easier to walk in than a single frame.

Balance the mass with something you can see through: a glass or gold-frame coffee table, a slim arc lamp, an open console. Then finish with three to five mixed-texture pillows rather than a matched set.
